Day 21 of Advent
Still in the book of Exodus, still with Moses in talks with God
on the top of Mount Sinai on how God and humans are to be in personal
relationship. No getting past the fact
that blood plays a significant role in this initial plan. Far from Eden, far from the garden, far from
“In the beginning God created…” Now at
the top of the mountain it seems that humans are barely able to hold on to God,
that the only way is through a tragic ritual of absolution that keeps them
focused on the seriousness of sin. Today
no one seems to take sin seriously, which keeps Advent at arms length. This is Advent, its only reason for being, to
send God’s Son here as the final lesson on the seriousness of sin. We seem to have forgotten that sin is human’s
most serious problem, not global warming, racial reconciliation, nuclear proliferation,
or who is in the White House. Sin is
it. But Advent begins the cure. Praise God for Advent.
