Sunday morning begins quiet enough to hear the seconds speed by
on the clock on the wall and promises to close with a moon of celestial
size. Both these things seems to secure
for me the Sabbath, quiet so that I might hear and cosmic that I might know my
need for firm place. Quiet is not a lack
of sound but actually a lack of being, of being busy, of being distracted by
attraction. Quiet allows one to hear and
often to hear only what is sincerely worth hearing. As for cosmic one almost always hears when he
has established his place in the universe.
The universe or cosmos is the greatest physical thing we know. It can overwhelm us with its size and our infinitesimal
minuteness. In quietness
this size disparity can become despairing.
That is why it is so critical for one to know one's place in the
cosmos. I believe only One Way can be
received by humans in order to securely fix our ultimate importance in the
vastness of what we know as cosmic space and that Way is securely celebrated on
every Sabbath most likely in the quiet morning of its beginning.
