To Danny and Terry:
It is over. Christmas
ended at mid-night last night. I
actually slept through it. That strikes
me as odd this morning because of all the emotional, physical and spiritual
energy I expended anticipating it. Why
would I sleep through the last hour?
Humans need a cause to hook themselves to, a reason to be intentionally
engaged in day-to-day life. I first
realized this in organized sports. I
would expend untold physical and emotional hours belonging to that band of
brothers. I loved them and they loved me
and we liked to believe we would fight and die for each other. I lived in this community for twelve years
and can still remember the devastating blow when it completely ended one Monday
morning at the age of 18. After that I
spent years looking for another cause to attach myself to. Because I had learned that great cost and
physical sacrifice was a pre-requisite for admission and acceptance I applied
the same logic to every other cause.
Many of these causes were destructive, self centered and addictive but I
lived them with the gusto I had learned from years on the field. Eventually I “came to my senses” and learned
the greatest lesson in life, there is “the cause” which all humans long to
belong, it is the cause of love, and its Mentor and Coach is Christ. It is no opiate for the masses, it is the
cure for the masses and although it is offered only one way and by only one
name, Jesus, it is carried and lived out by His ambassadors. The rules are
simple, love God and love others, but the life is exactly like the one I lived
years ago, a life of love and absolute abundance. The Greatest Cause and our cure for how we
live now that…Christmas is over.
Well, some say that today is the second day of Christmas, and that are 10 more to go!
