The last few days I have lived at the Winthrop Rockefeller
estate where it is obvious that money was no object. It is very rewarding to see a great environment;
home and structures that are well thought out and constructed with fine
material, landscapes that are sensitive to plant shape and color along with
flowing sight lines of pasture and field creating grand views. Humans can have such a creative way with the
earth and gently but with overwhelming purpose, create it anew and when it is
done with unlimited resources it can be idyllic.
While I was in there I was building a sculpture in Petit Jean
State Park and also hiking in the wilderness of south central Arkansas. All three environments rely on nature to
carry the idea of meaning. Manicured
estate, State Park, Wilderness are varying stages of the same thing but if
manicured estate is humans idyllic creation, I believe wilderness is best
understood as God’s creating heaven on earth.
