On Super Bowls and Super Dads

As I was studying this morning I happened to think, “who is my authority?”  I pondered that for a moment, thinking back over my life.  I was surprised to realize that as a youngster Joe Namath and my dad were my authorities.  By authority I mean someone who you looked at as true and then tried to be that true.  These two men, Joe and dad, are very different people except in one regard, they both lived faithfully modeling their authority.  One won a Super Bowl.  One won my heart.  One got a ring.  One got a crown.

When your heart is at stake you better choose wisely.  It seems, as I get older, my heart is at stake every day, mostly all day every day.  I once taught a whole summer on Hardscrabble Mountain in Colorado on the verse, “Guard your heart above all else, for it determines the course of your life.”  Winning someone’s heart is quite a feat.  The great grace of my morning this morning is that my dad didn’t win my heart for himself but for Someone Else.  Thanks dad.
