This morning I read Winston Churchill’s speech, “Never Give In”
given to his school, Harrow, in 1941 when Great Britain bravely stood alone
against the Nazis. I read it because
these are rapidly becoming America’s greatest days. Our country is in a great war whose aim is to
pacify its citizens with free bread, and entertainment sucking the poison of individual
freedom from the breast of an oppressive government. A great amnesia is sweeping America where we
are drunk on free wine instead of being invigorated by freedom. Yes, this is in many ways our finest hour
where great men and women are called to rise up. Today we are mired in a lowly political
process. There is little to be admired
in either party and much to be rejected as both seek to destroy the other
thereby destroying half of us. What
could be called good that would seek to destroy half of all American citizens? No political party deserves our allegiance
whose goal is to marginalize half of its citizens. Yes, we are drunk, staggering under the brew
of hatred on tap from every news outlet.
But greatness is never more needed than when our world is drunkenly
crumbling under a government unfit to govern.
Yes, it is America’s finest hour as it calls us all to a great
accounting, to be The United States, to cast our vote in the ballot booth and
then, allow our greater selves to rise up, disregard politics and walk across
the street and love our neighbor as ourself.
It is America’s greatest days, will there be found Americans to live
them?
