There is no greater mirror for body and soul than nature. Nature never coaxes you in or sends out monogrammed invitations enticing you to come, it only is. It has no regard for you, it cares nothing for your achievements or medals, it just is—and its meaning is that it takes you just as you are, you a living thing, it a living thing, now how do the two of you get on? It also doesn’t abide your frailties, your poor habits or your excuses, it doesn’t listen and doesn’t have the means to care anyway, it is cold because it is, it is windy because it is, it is steep and deep and hot and wet, it rains on your recreational days and is hot as blue blazes on the days you labor. It has no drop and add deadlines, you can’t drop the hottest day and you can’t add the most comfortable, you can’t even schedule one, a day, an hour, or a second, nature doesn’t make appointments nor changes its content to accommodate yours. Nature is perhaps the only way to truly measure our stuff, the right stuff, that which separates us from all other stuff. We are human beings, we have been gifted with the right stuff, but only nature gives us the ability to open our gift.
