Of Dust and Dogs

The mortal man, all careful, wise, and troubled,
The eternal child in the nursery doth keep.
To-morrow on to-day the man heaps doubled;
The child laughs, hopeful, even in his sleep.
The man rebukes the child for foolish trust;
The child replies, “Thy care is for poor dust;
Be still, and let me wake that thou mayst sleep.”

George MacDonald

Dear Lord, save me from the “dust” today!

I love dogs.  I have had one since I was 4 or 5.  My current dog is 12, blind, deaf and has lost most of her ability to smell.  Her greatest desire is just to be with me.  She will follow me and where I sit she will lay in the floor and sleep.  If I move she moves.  There is no way to know her thoughts but I do believe she is completely unaware of her physical state and just as completely (instinctively) aware of her present state, that of being with me.

There is not a grain of “dust” in her life.

I can learn a lot about my relationship with God from my dog.

My Dear God, help me to be always present with You!

Amen.
