The Good Student

Beauty is a common state in nature.  Human creations, often labeled as beauty, are better labeled as well crafted.  A difficult issue in art instruction is to insure the student understands the importance of craftsmanship without coming to believe that it is, by itself, beauty.  Craftsmanship is content for the beginning art student but can never carry the burden of beauty.  An artist knows this difficult fact because artists are lifelong pupils of nature.  In nature the artist finds beauty so profound that its underlying exquisite craftsmanship is only discovered after years of meaningful and purposeful observation.
