Luke 6:12-49, I Kings 11
King Solomon dies. The
wisest man who ever lived, songwriter, inventor, scientist, explorer, wealthy
beyond measure, the Renaissance man of all Renaissance men, “and Solomon slept
with his fathers.” He passes into
history and the last recording of his life in I Kings says, “when Solomon was
old, his wives turned his heart away after other gods; and his heart was not
wholly devoted to the Lord his God.” 11:4
A better epitaph would have been the title of our Sunday school lesson,
“When Solomon was old he still lived to benefit others.” All this reminded me of what Jesus says
to us in Mark 8:36, “For what does it profit a man to gain the whole world, and
forfeit his soul?”
